A processing line for flexible production of refuse-derived fuels
in different qualities – a case study of Helmut Westarp
For its customer Westarp in Aschaffenburg, Vecoplan implemented an efficient, flexible processing line for a wide range of high-quality refuse-derived fuels. In order to avoid interfaces and minimise its administrative costs, Westarp looked for a company that could provide a one-stop solution, from project planning to installation to commissioning. Vecoplan AG provided Westarp with two high-performance pre-shredders for feeding material to a plant with settings for various sorting and shredding requirements. [Photo: Vecoplan AG]

A quantum leap in quality and process control

Results in under 60 minutes instead of at least 24 hours. The polab® Cal system automatically prepares cement samples and analyzes them on the basis of parameters defined by the plant operator. polab® Cal can weigh the sample, set the water-cement ratio, blend the samples, load them into the calorimeter, and automatically evaluate the data. polab® Cal is of modular design and can operate one or more calorimeters. polab® Cal closes the gap between process and product quality control.

Latest trends in clay activation
The cement industry is under pressure. The carbon footprint of the cement production has to be reduced significantly, the clinker ratio in cement has to be minimized but the availability of some of the mostly used supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) is already in a decline. Activated clays are a promising opportunity to close this gap because of their excellent pozzolanic properties and widespread availability. [Photo: Cementos Argos]

BEUMER Group: U-shape conveyor

The U-shape conveyor allows the implementation of narrower curve radii than a troughed belt conveyor and higher mass flows than a pipe conveyor. At the same time and contrary to the troughed belt conveyor, it protects the material conveyed from environmental influence and the environment from material loss and emissions. Thus this u-shaped conveying solution has proven to be an ideal alternative in the cement industry as well as in port terminals if high capacity is required with little space available.

“Fit for 55” should help industry decarbonise
Cembureau, the association of the European cement industry, is ready to engage on the “Fit for 55” legislative package published by the European Commission on 14 July 2021. “Delivering deep emission cuts by 2030 is a major challenge. It requires a coherent package that boosts the take-up of low-carbon technologies while addressing the risk of carbon leakage, at a time when the EU is increasing its climate ambition”, said Koen Coppenholle, Cembureau Chief Executive.

Hot-gas generators and impulse burners for alternative fuels
Companies with large heat needs are now searching more than ever for fuels which can be considered CO2 neutral or can at least reduce CO2 emissions. Carbotechnik Energiesysteme GmbH has developed for this purpose combustion and dosing systems, using biogenic fuels which can be combusted in powder form. [Figure: Carbotechnik]
