Kick-off: Research project on hydrogen as an alternative fuel for tunnel kilns
Over the next few years, a consortium of companies and research institutes will be working on the development of a new tunnel kiln concept that operates with hydrogen as fuel. The hydrogen project has been launched under the auspices of the Federal German government’s hydrogen strategy and under the pressure of the energy transition with an initiative of Kärlicher Schamottewerke (KTS) in cooperation with the Glass-Ceramics Research Institute (FGK). The first application phase has been concluded, and the submitted sketch is currently being scrutinized by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in the scope of the KlimPro Industrie research programme launched by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Kick-off: Forschungsprojekt Wasserstoff als alternativer Brennstoff in Tunnelöfen

Eirich - Additive manufacturing: Koblenz University of Applied Sciences decides for Eirich mixer

Photo: Eirich

At the competence center for 3D printing of ceramics in Hoehr-Grenzhausen, Germany, refractory molded parts are to be produced for the first time. For the preparation of the mixes, the university has placed an order with Eirich to supply a mixer. While the construction industry is now producing entire houses as demonstration objects for additive manufacturing, the ceramics industry still has some catching up to do when it comes to larger components and objects.

Mineral carbonation of ceramic bricks

Photo: Domingo Martín, Patricia Aparicio, Emilio Galán†

Mineral carbonation, or mineral sequestration, of CO2 was proposed by Seiftriz in 1990 [3] as an equivalent process that occurs naturally from weathering of silicate rocks into carbonates in a CO2-rich environment. However, these natural processes take place on the geological scale of time. Of the alkaline earth metals, calcium and magnesium are by far the most common in nature. Large quantities of industrial minerals and industrial wastes rich in alkaline oxides are available for CO2 fixation. Therefore, calcium and magnesium are generally selected for the sequestration of mineral CO2 . (Extract from the doctoral thesis by Domingo Martín)
